STEAM Ahead is in full speed thanks to Fidelity Investments!

Did you know in the majority of Canadian Provinces including British Columbia, math and science courses are only required up to Grade 10? As a result, dropout rates in those subjects are high. At Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs learning and career development is a core value and we want to ensure participants are interested in learning and exploring a future in science and math related careers.

With support from Fidelity Investments and their $7000.00 contribution to the STEAM Ahead program, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs – Martin Ave. and Cedar Creek are able to ensure participants have access to extracurricular support around STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects.

The overall goal of STEAM Ahead is to help provide children and youth with the resources to introduce, enhance, and expand their skills in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Design and Math through engaging and accessible programming.

Mixing visual, auditory, and hands-on activities to engage different learning styles, STEAM Ahead uses “engineering kits.” The children assemble these kits into familiar objects that demonstrate basic engineering concepts. The models are made from paper, wood, and a range of fastening devices and show the properties of levers, cranks, propellers, skipjacks, and axels. Shasta Scott, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs – Martin Ave, Program Coordinator stated “We are bringing more learning based programs into our clubs. The STEAM Ahead program might really spark the interest of a few of our older members and get them excited to explore this path further down the road in their education and potential career. After one week the kids enjoyed their first kit and cannot wait to see what comes next. ”

Thank you Fidelity Investments for believing every child deserves a great future. We are excited to see the impact this program will have on our participants at both Martin Ave and Cedar Creek service locations.
