Happy New Year to all of you! I hope everyone found some time to rest and relax over the holidays; and enjoy time with family and friends. We were happy to do that in our house, with all of our kids safely arriving home to spend time together as a family. We have a tradition of opening Christmas Crackers before dinner. It’s always funny to watch everyone don a crown of brightly coloured tissue paper. We often wonder whether we have big heads or if they just make those tissue hats too small?
The start of a new year gives us a chance to reflect on 2016. We accomplished a lot together over the past year, much of which just wouldn’t be possible without your interest, support, and engagement in the work we are doing. Below are some examples of what is possible when people come together in the interest of kids and families.
Our Great Futures Campaign raised $23 338 for kids, youth, and families. We were lucky to have a group of eager carolers raising awareness of our organization during the campaign. Another successful initiative was our Adopt-A-Family hamper program. Individuals and organizations from across the valley eagerly stepped up to give families a happy Christmas. Additionally, community members in Armstrong ran the highest grossing campaign yet for our Food Bank. 2016 was a year of many noteworthy milestones that you can read about below.
We are very excited about what’s to come in 2017. We have some ambitious plans that will require each and every one of you to help us in some way. We are working on upgrading our club facilities to ensure they are safe and engaging for children, youth, and families. We also intend to grow our services, both within our clubs and outside, to address the needs of Okanagan communities.
2017 is full of promises and new beginnings. We need your engagement and support to accomplish our goals. There are so many ways you can help. Start by telling a friend or colleague about Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs and why you support our work. Encourage them to sign up for our newsletter, visit our website, or follow us on social media. We think they’ll be surprised when they learn more about us.
