Back to School Welcome

By hmcneil

Hello everyone,

September is in many ways the start of a new year. For kids, it’s a time of new
beginnings, starting kindergarten, moving to a new school, starting a new activity for
the first time. For teens, it’s moving into high school and trying to navigate the ups
and downs of being a teenager. For parents and grandparents, fall means settling
into the routine of homework and afterschool activities. Sometimes, however, new
beginnings are much harder than they should be. They are fraught with obstacles
and adverse conditions. We are constantly surprised by the remarkable kids we
know who demonstrate personal strength, resiliency and an incredible will to thrive,
despite their circumstances.

For us at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, fall is no different. We hold our
Annual General Meeting every September, which gives us a chance to reflect on
our work over the past year. This year, the 50 people who attended had a chance to
listen to Jessica Watson tell her story. Jessica was a Club Member at our Webber
Road Club before becoming a volunteer, and she has recently been hired as a
valued member of our staff team. Jessica spoke about how she found a place to
belong at the Club, and how we were her “home away from home.” We’re very
proud of the young woman that Jessica has become.

Click this link to read our Annual Report for 2015-2016, which is full of all sorts of
information about who we are and what we do. We invite you to learn more about
us. Come visit one of our locations, drop us a line, or follow us on social media. We
think you’ll be surprised about the extent of our programs and services, and the
ways that we reach kids throughout the Okanagan. We have 1,200 children, youth
and families walk through the doors of our 41 club locations every day. Please join
us in helping children and youth in the Okanagan grow and develop into happy,
healthy and successful and active participants in society.
